Left Front chairperson Biman Bose said on Friday that the seat-sharing agreement with the Congress in the state was a step towards breaking the BJP-Trinamool binary in the Lok Sabha polls and the outcome would become clear on June 4.

"The call is to save the nation by defeating the BJP nationally and save the state by ensuring the defeat of the Trinamool Congress in Bengal.... The objective has been achieved to some extent as Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi is not just talking about Trinamool but today I heard him speaking about the Left and the Congress. We have been able to create a situation that is compelling him to refer to the Left-Congress combine," Bose said at the Calcutta Press Club on Friday.

Brushing off charges that the Left stand in the polls would in a way help the saffron camp, the CPM veteran said defeating the BJP was the CPM's avowed objective because if the BJP won a third term, the BJP would change the Constitution.

"The Prime Minister is dividing the nation on the basis of the Manuwadi philosophy but he is accusing the Left and Congress — he has also clubbed the TMC in it — of trying to divide the nation. This is a typical Goebbelsian tactic. He is trying to shift the responsibility on the Opposition for things he wants to do.... It is the BJP that is continuously dividing the nation on the basis of religion, caste and creed. Therefore, not one vote should be cast in favour of the BJP," he said.

He also hit out at the Trinamool on charges of corruption.

"One of the functionaries of Trinamool, who is not on the post anymore, has said that the party was aware of Partha Chatterjee's corruption before 2021 and that is why he was not made an education minister. But now Trinamool leaders are uttering lies. Even the chief minister is saying I did not know anything about the corruption... How could she say it? The supernumerary post was created at the cabinet meeting helmed by the chief minister," Bose said.
