Netflix has announced that it is moving forward with a sequel to the 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore with Adam Sandler on board to reprise his role as the titular rage golfer.

“Happy Gilmore is back! Adam Sandler will reprise his iconic role in a brand new movie coming to Netflix,” the streamer posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.

Actress Drew Barrymore recently teased the announcement on her talk show, telling viewers, “I have breaking news…I’ll just say this…that Happy Gilmore 2 is in process.”

Helmed by Dennis Dugan, the original film is one of Sandler’s most popular movies, telling the story of an unsuccessful ice hockey player who discovers a talent for golf and competes in a tournament to save his grandmother's home from foreclosure. Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen and Carl Weathers featured in key roles in the comedy written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy.

While the upcoming sequel will reportedly see the cast of the original film reprising their roles, some of the actors, including Frances Bay (Grandma Gilmore) and Carl Weathers (Chubbs), have since passed away.

Sandler has a US$250 million Netflix deal and has produced eight titles for the streaming service, ranging from Western parody The Ridiculous Six to dramedy Sandy Wexler to his acclaimed stand-up special 100% Fresh. His most recent was the teen comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, which premiered on Netflix last August.
