Jail term for sex workers

Two sex workers were pronounced guilty of trying to kill a colleague by the fast-track court at Bankshal court on Saturday.

Hema Ghosh and Purnima Dutta had poured kerosene on Chaina Bibi, a fellow sex-worker, and set her ablaze three years ago following a quarrel over collecting water from a roadside hand-pump. The woman had run straight to the nearby Muchipara police station with 50 per cent burns and lodged a complaint.

Chaina Bibi’s fight for justice came to an end with the additional district session judge of the second fast-track court B.K. Srivastav awarding seven years’ rigorous imprisonment to the guilty and imposing a fine of Rs 5,000 each.
