16-year-old crushed under bus wheels
Devanshu Saha, 16, died after being knocked down by a bus on route 214 on BT Road, near Sinthee More, in the Cossipore police station area, on Sunday morning. Deputy commissioner of police (north) P. Ravi said the boy was about to get off the bus when he slipped and fell, and was crushed under the rear wheels of the vehicle. Devanshu was pronounced brought dead at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Home rules for civic doctors
Municipal commissioner Debashis Som has issued a notice making it mandatory for doctors of Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) to live in the quarters attached to clinics and maternity homes. A senior civic official said on Sunday that a surprise visit to a CMC maternity home recently revealed that two doctors were absent from duty. They could not even be summoned, as they lived in quarters far from the maternity home.
Awareness week
A traffic awareness week will be inaugurated in Howrah on Monday and continue till February 15. A senior Howrah police officer said the programme will include school students under the leadership of 13 traffic guards.
Crafts fair
The National Handicrafts Expo 2004, organised by the Union ministry of textiles, was inaugurated on the Maidan on Sunday. It will continue till February 22.
Surgeon dies
ENT surgeon Amitava Ray died at his residence on Thursday night. Ray was attached to SSKM Hospital and had been professor of ENT at Calcutta Medical College. He was a former president of Calcutta Club.
