Poll ad meet

New Delhi, March 28 (PTI): Information and broadcasting minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today directed ministry officials to hold a meeting of its advertising committee tomorrow to prepare a reply to yesterday’s Election Commission notice on unfair advertisements.

The ministry is also expected to seek legal opinion on the matter in the backdrop of the March 23 ruling of Andhra Pradesh High Court on political advertisements. The order had struck down a rule under the Cable Network Regulation Act that bars political advertisements on the electronic media, saying it was discriminatory and violated the right to freedom.

Prasad’s move followed consultations with his ministry officials today as part of efforts to prevent advertisements targeting individuals, sources said.

The poll panel yesterday decided to act tough on complaints about unfair advertisements on television by political parties.
