Post-party crash kills Delhi youth

New Delhi, July 20: The party virus has struck again on Delhi roads, killing a would-be army officer who was out celebrating with three friends the success in clearing the defence services test.

The Maruti Zen in which the four, in their twenties, were returning home after a late-night party rammed into a stationary truck around 2.30 am today on Nelson Mandela Marg in south Delhi.

Rahul Mishra was declared brought dead to Safdarjung Hospital. His three friends, Rahul Tyagi, Siddharth Naik and Himanshu Vasudev, suffered critical injuries. All four had cleared the Combined Defence Services examination.

Mishra joins a growing list of the young snuffed out on Delhi roads in the night. Filmmaker Nishit Saran and veejay Pooja Bannerji were two such victims.

Police officials said the four youths appeared to have been in an inebriated condition. They said the the combined effect of alcohol and the poorly-lit roads might have hidden the parked truck from the moving car.

Traffic police officers said drunken driving is one of the most frequent causes of fatal accidents on Delhi roads.
