| EXCHANGING NOTES: Participants at the St
James Musical Talent Hunt and (below), Mark Tully, one of the chief guests at
Assam Valley School?s Founder?s Day celebrations |
 |
It was a musical weekend at St James' School.
Students danced and swayed as more than 100 participants demonstrated their musical
skills at the Annual Music Talent Contest on November 26 and 27.
The competition was divided into eastern and western
(solo vocal and instrumental) as well as eastern and western dance. ?It was an
inter-house contest and the participants were representing their respective houses.
The most wonderful thing about the contest is that it throws up great, young talent
every year,? says principal T.H. Ireland.
Apart from the vocal and instrumental rounds, each
house had a band taking part in the competition. Prizes were given away to the
winners in each category.

Founder?s Day
The Founder?s Day celebrations of Assam Valley School
were held on November 6 and 7. The programmes started with an exhibition inaugurated
by Ms J. Garwood, a member of the board of governors. It was followed by a presentation
by our Indian and Western choirs and classical dance in the Williamson Magor Hall.
The evening?s proceedings started with a dumb-bell
drill by our junior school, followed by mass PT, judo, traditional japi dance
etc. The drill, gymnastics and torchlight tattoo were particularly liked by the
parents and the chief guest ? Air Commodore Abhay Gupta.
Our chief guest for the second day was renowned journalist
Sir Mark Tully. After speeches by our chairman P.K. Khaitan, Sir Mark and the
headmaster Derek Mountford, awards were presented for excellence in various spheres.
In the evening, there was a fabulous play by the junior and middle school.
Thus, our Founder?s Day celebrations ? for which we
had been practising for three months ? came to and end. We felt sad but also satisfied.

Fete fever
Right from the month of September, a contagious disease
had struck the teachers and students of the Assembly of God Church School, Sodepur.
It was the grand AG fete fever. The fete was held on October 7, 8 and 9.
The fete had some 30 stalls. Some of them served mouth-watering
snacks ? both Indian and Chinese while the others had games like canning the cans,
chocolate casino etc. The stall which really caught the pulse of the youngsters
was the music station which played popular numbers.
The fete was open only to home students on Day I but
on the second day, we played host to schools like St Patrick?s and St Vincent?
s, Asansol, Burnpur Riverside and AG Ukhra. The last day was open to all.

Welcome aboard
Freshers? Welcome is an exciting and much-awaited
event for every student entering college. Naturally, I was quite excited when
I was invited to the freshers? party. I was also a bit scared as I had heard of
the leg-pulling by the seniors. We were told to wear a sari on that day.
So, with a beautiful sari on and a pounding heart,
I entered the college. I was quite surprised when I found that the seniors had
taken a lot of trouble to organise a smashing party. We were served lip-smacking
dishes and entertained with a cultural programme.
Instead of teasing us, they made us feel loved. The
party got over with the seniors and juniors dancing together.
