Boxoffice Curves

It looks like some of our most talented film persons have lucked out big time. Akshaye Khanna, Kareena Kapoor, Arshad Warsi and of course director Priyadarshan have a lot to chuckle about. Their ever-grin comedy, Hulchul, has had the best opening one could hope for. If all goes well, the film would be a huge money-spinner. Akshaye Khanna whose career was up against Deewaar earlier this year sounded guarded. ?Let?s see. It seems to be going well. I knew it would get an audience. When I had showed it to about 50 of my close family and friends who, mind you, would never lie to me, they loved it in one voice. It?s a very ?massy? kind of film.? But, er, the crudity? Kareena who hasn?t had a big hit to her credit since her second release, Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai, shrugs her shoulder. ?People are liking the movie and at the end of the day a hit film is a hit film. I can?t only be doing Chameli and Dev. I?ve to attempt hardcore commercial films, too. So did my sister Karisma. I thoroughly enjoyed doing Hulchul. Since its release I?ve got non-stop feedback on it.?

Priyadarshan certainly sounded jubilant on Sunday morning. With Hulchul getting a cent per cent opening all over the country this prolific director has a hattrick of comedies in Hindi. I question him about the crudity in the language. It would seem poor Priyan, who converses in Malayalam and English, allows his regular dialogue writer Neeraj Vora to get away with murder. But now Priyan has promised to be careful with the words. No more South Indian films for Priyan for the next three years. He wants to concentrate on his Hindi career. But would he please be more careful with the dubbing? The amazing Laxmi (the hot and sizzling Julie 30 years before Neha Dhupia) who plays Kareena?s grandmother in Hulchul sounds so alien. Her voice has been dubbed by Rohini Hattangadi! That?s as alien as it gets.
