Gopal schedule

London, Dec. 5 (PTI): Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Bengal?s governor designate, today said he would reach Calcutta on December 14.

?It is an honour to be appointed as governor of Bengal,? said Gopal Gandhi, who will succeed Viren J. Shah. A grandson of the Mahatma, he had earlier served as India?s high commissioner to South Africa and Sri Lanka.

BSF ?suicide?

Krishnagar: Ajit Singh, a Border Security Force constable, allegedly committed suicide on Sunday in his tent at the New Shikarpur border outpost in Nadia, about 200 km from Calcutta. Additional superintendent of police Biswarup Ghosh said Singh, 22, shot thrice from his rifle. Ghosh said: ?A probe is on. We heard that he was part of a battalion being shifted to Kashmir.?

Imam dead

Calcutta (PTI): The imam of Nakhoda mosque, Maulana Mohd Sabir, died on Sunday of heart ailment. The namaaz-e-zanaza would be performed at the mosque at 12.30 pm on Monday. His last rites would be performed at Kidderpore.

Erosion funds

Behrampore: The Centre will spend about Rs 50 crore to prevent erosion in Malda, Murshidabad and North Dinajpur, defence minister Pranab Mukherjee said here. The MP from Jalangi in Murshidabad also said that the Farakka barrage authorities have been given the responsibility to implement the project.

Eviction drive

Krishnagar: About 150 shops, which had encroached on the land of the Nadia district jail here, have been evicted. Subdivisional officer Ajay Sannamat said: ?We had pleaded with them for months to leave the land and allow construction of a wall around the one existing.?
