DVD/VCD reviews

Channel B presents two National Award-winning films, Damu (Rs 99) and Atmiyoswajan (Rs 99) on VCD, both directed by the much-acclaimed documentary and filmmaker Raja Sen, who has to his credit three National Awards.

The first award came with his very first feature film, Damu, in 1995 in the Best Children?s Film category. This film also got him the Shiromoni Award for the Best Film Director that year. Damu, played by Raghubir Yadav, is a dim-brained servant with a good heart. To keep his promise to his lord?s (Satya Bandhopadhya) grand-daughter he ventures out in search of an elephant. And after many adventures he brings back an elephant from the circus just to see the little one smile. This story is written by Narayan Gangopadhyay and has been loved by children.

Raja Sen?s next film, Atmiyoswajan, also received the National Award in the Best Family Film category in 1999. It?s a Samaresh Majumdar story. It gives a heart-rending account of an old man played by Soumitra Chatterjee with a strict code of ethics. He is deeply wounded to find his three sons caught in the decadent urban values, one daughter married to a corrupt official, the other into an unstable marriage. He decides to escape from it all by taking his own life and also persuades his wife, Supriya Devi, to join him since he doesn?t want to leave her behind. The screenplay is by Ujjal Chatterjee.
