DVD/VCD reviews

Vikram Bhatt’s Yakeen (DVD; Rs 349) is, true to tradition, a Bollywood adaptation of Wolfgang Peterson’s Shattered . The story is about an amnesiac victim of a road accident trying to piece his life together. Aesthetically mounted with the hilly, misty landscape characteristic to most of Vikram Bhatt’s works, the location helps the plot to advance. Debutant director Girish Dhamija seems inspired by many filmmaking styles. Priyanka Chopra and Arjun Rampalstar in Yakeen and the cast includes Kim Sharma, Saurabh Shukla and Suddhanshu Pande. Shemaroo’s DVD of a recent release comes with English subtitles.

Ssukh (VCD; Rs 149) is MP Govinda’s ‘comeback’ effort to the silver screen, and is naturally presented by Govinda No. 1 Entertainment, and directed by elder brother Kirti Ahuja, Govinda makes a comeback, okay, but in a different avataar. Here he is in a very ‘decent’ role that is far from his usual loud image. Though the audience loves to see him in his comic flamboyant self, this bespectacled Govinda romancing Preeti Jhangiani intrigues. Ssukh for Govinda fans ought to be a different experience. The cast includes Chunkey Pandey and Aarti Chabria. The VCD is available as a Shemaroo title.

Shemaroo has released this Naseeruddin Shah starrer, Encounter ? The Killing (DVD; Rs 349) where Naseeruddin Shah plays an honest police officer in the Crime Branch, Mumbai Police, who believes in reforming the criminals instead of condemning and punishing them. But in a shootout, he kills a youngster from a good family who had resorted to the profession of a sharpshooter for easy money. Tormented, he tries to locate his parents to perform his last rites. The story traces his journey in search of the youth’s parents and in the process a lot of his own perspectives on life and society changes. Directed by Ajay Phansekar, the film also stars Tara Deshpande.
