HIGH SPIRITS: Students perform at Umang 2005

Umang 2005, the annual inter-college fest of Bhawanipore College, was held from November 14 to 20 and saw more than 50 colleges vying for the top awards all through the fun-filled, action-packed week. ?You dream it, we theme it?, was the slogan of the fest which saw some brilliant performances from the students of Bhawanipore College, who finished as overall winners, as well as those from the Narsee Monji Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai, who took the second spot in a tight finish.

Apart from Delhi-based DJ Sid?s rocking remixes on Day One, the other major events were the fashion show, the fusion dance, war of the DJs and the ?mock a filmi act?. Bhawanipore College won the fusion dance competition as well as the war of the DJs. The closing ceremony was held on November 20. Umang 2005 will be special for final-year students of Bhawanipore College as this was their last college fest. We would like to wish them all the best and also thank our teachers without whom Umang would have remained a dream.

Act and play

All roads led to the auditorium of St Xavier?s Collegiate School on November 10 as it was time for ?Rangotsav?, the inter-college Hindi skit competition. With a long list of elite schools participating, expectations ran high. For two-and-a- half hours, the audience was treated to intense performances as the schools vied with each other to put up an impressive performance. As the chief guest put it at the end of the competition, ?each school was a winner?.

But imagine our joy when St Xavier?s won its third successive crown. Calcutta Girls were a close second, followed by Loreto House.

Media matters

A media workshop titled ?Crossover: It?s Different? was organised by the Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication (SIMC), Pune at the Rotary Sadan on November 12. The speakers were Shyamal Sengupta, former dean of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute and Arijit Dutta, proprietor of Priya Entertainment Ltd, with actor-director-musician Anjan Dutta adding the star factor.

In the students? debate on ?Are Indian films ready to cross over??, Subhojoy Roy from Ashutosh College, speaking against the motion, emerged triumphant, followed by Rohini Ghosh of Gokhale College and Nivedita Bhattacharya of St Xavier?s College.
