All cats belong to the family
Felidae. The Felidae family consists of four
groups; Panthera ? the large or greater or big cats;
Acinonyx ? the cheetahs; Felis ? the small
or lesser cats; and (now extinct) Smilodon ? the
gorgeous sabre-toothed tigers.
Domestic cats or ghar
ki billi as they are referred to are found
wherever there are people to love them! Evidence suggests
that humans and cats lived together 8,000 years ago, but
it was the ancient Egyptians who began domesticating them
about 4,000 years ago.
Today domestic cats come in all
kinds of shapes, sizes and colours as we have bred them
for specific traits, for example the long fur and shorter
snout of the Persian cat in the photograph.
