DVD/VCD reviews

The Godfather trilogy is an all-time classic ? an exquisite Mafia epic with outstanding history-making performances. The novel by Mario Puzo, who also wrote the screenplay for all three parts, made the life and work of ?The Family? that ruled New York a living reality.

Vito Corleone, the aging head of the Corleone Mafia Family intrigues. It?s a tale of power, principles and prejudices. From Marlon Brando (awarded an Oscar for the Best Lead Actor) to Al Pacino who takes over from his father it?s a journey most unique.

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Godfather was released in 1972, the second followed in two years. In The Godfather II, the saga of the Corleone family goes back to tell the story of a young Vito Corleone growing up in Sicily and in 1910s New York. The young Vito played by Robert DeNiro, too, got an Oscar for the Best Supporting Actor.

The third part, however, came only after a decade and more, in 1990. Here Al Pacino, now the aging Don Michael Corleone wants to legitimise his family?s interests and remove himself from the violent underworld, but the young generation thought otherwise.

It?s amazing to know that Paramount senior management, dissatisfied with the early rushes, had considered replacing Francis Ford Coppola who later brought them innumerable awards, money and fame. It was Brando who made it possible by threatening to quit if Coppola was fired. And Coppola got everything right, thus creating a landmark in cinema.

Here?s a collector?s pack of 8 VCDs (all three parts) at Rs 750, from SaReGaMa in a nice black giftbox. So in the inimitable Brando style let?s just say, it?s an offer you can?t refuse.
