MONKEYing around
Bandars or bonnet macaques are fun and sociable animals, living in groups of 20 to 30 animals and dominated by a core group of males. These monkeys get their name from the ?bonnet? of dark hair that radiates in a cap-like whorl from the centre of their heads. They are found in lowlands or dry deciduous forests in the Indian peninsula from as far as Mumbai in the west to the Godavari river in the east. Bonnet macaques are medium-sized and have long tails ? all the better to swing with! Their coats are a shiny dusky-brown in winter and while the males among them have pale little faces, the females are much redder. They have black ears and a black lower lip. These monkeys aren?t really choosy when it comes to eating and feed on practically anything ? berries, leaves and shoots to insects, cereals and ripe fruits. In the wild, bonnet macaques live for 12 to 15 years and sometimes, though rarely, even up to 30!
