QUICKTAKES

Violence celebrated

ZINDA

Director: Sanjay Gupta Cast: Sunjay Dutt, John Abraham, Lara Dutta, Celina Jaitly, Raj Zutshi, Mahesh Manjrekar

6/10

Oh yeah, buddy, umm alive and umm kickin’ still. That’s the Zen art of seeing Korean flick, Oldboy, dubbed in, umm, is it Hindi that, umm, the Deadly Dutt speaks, and umm, even sings! Whyphor this other Sanjay makes films which he don’t wanna, umm, his kids and ours to see? Natch. Not coz Lara Taxidriver, the other Deadly Dutta, in Bangkok could violently shake up your testosterone. So who does this, umm, Gupta guy think he is, Tarantino, huh? The rest of this macho-macho gang is there too, Raj and Mahesh, they who, umm, becoming stereotype deviants, no? And Celina? She was also there?

But second half starts putting, umm, pieces together and going back to the schooldays of the Deadly Dutt ? actually scummy King Kong especially in villain’s den scene where he, dead beat himself with, umm, knife in back, clobbers a score of Thai heads (Tarantino version of Amitabh-Peter scene in, umm, Deewaar’s garage). And pitted against is John, cast in a, umm, tailormade role of Natty Nasty. John’s picked up another half expression to his, hmm, single one so far. And that really, umm, hits you hard.
