This week: Skin care

mole on cheek

I have a mole on my cheek near the mouth. It’s not completely black and is almost flat. Is it possible to remove such a mole?

You are probably suffering from a case of verruca plana (viral infection) or milia (tiny tumour on the face). Surgery by electro-cautery (a process of burning tissue with an electric current) is helpful. It can also be removed by dermabrasion, a technique in which the superficial layer of the skin is removed by applying chemicals like trichloro acetic acid. The latest treatment is laser surgery which is not widely available in India.

itching

I have been suffering from itching from my lower abdomen to the legs for the past 10 days. How can I get rid of this problem?

There could be many reasons behind this problem. The foremost is climate. In summer, excess perspiration may cause itching. In winter, it may be caused by dry skin. Fungal infection can be another cause. If it is due to dry skin, then you can use a moisturiser lotion twice or thrice a day. If you sweat repeatedly in winter, then you may have developed a fungal infection and you are then advised to take precautions. If the problem is severe, contact a dermatologist.

cracked lips

My lips crack in winter and blood oozes out. I use moisturisers to get relief. The problem, however, recurs after sometime. What should I do?

You are suffering from cheilitis, which is very common in winter. It can be caused due to cold weather and use of cheap cosmetics. You should use moisturiser four to five times daily. You should also eat fruits and vegetables containing vitamin C. And take care of dandruffs, if any.

excess sweating

I am a 58-year-old housewife. For the past one-and-a-half years, I have been suffering from excess sweating throughout the year. I consulted a doctor recently. He advised me to take a tablet of Evalon-forte daily. I took 10 tablets, but to no avail. What could be the reasons for such excess sweating?

Unusual sweating throughout the year may be hormonal in nature. You should go for a thyroid test and take medications accordingly. Unusual sweating may also be caused by neurological disorders or over-excitement. Sweating may be all over the body, or it may be segmental. You are advised to contact an endocrinologist and then a neurologist.
