Classical strings
Indian classical music enjoys a powerful presence on the global cultural horizon. Deeply influenced by it, students of music all over the world have dedicated themselves in receiving training from Indian maestros. This evening?s concert introduces the audience to artistes who have been initiated into their art by legends of Indian classical music in the present era. It comprises two recitals by artistes from the USA, beginning with a t?te-?-t?te on the performers? learning and playing experiences. The first is a sitar recital by Alif Laila (picture above right), accompanied by Rupak Bhattacharya on the tabla. Indoctrinated into the Senia Maihar gharana by the late Mir Qasim Khan, Laila, a Bangladeshi by birth, has performed in several countries, and is the first lady sitarist to have played at her home country?s Shahid Minar. This will be followed by a sarod recital by David Trasoff (picture above left), a senior disciple of Ali Akbar Khan. Having appeared in concerts at art centres and culture festivals in the US, Europe and Asia, Trasoff has also composed and performed for films and participated in contemporary music, theatre and dance projects. To be accompanied by Arup Sen Gupta on the tabla.
