Have you ever wondered why the witch in your fairy tale or, for that matter, your favourite Harry Potter is always shown to ride on broomsticks? Well, in the olden times, the only means of livelihood for most people was farming. Since their lives were closely tied to the land, the practice of jumping through the fields on a broomstick was very common. The witch, sitting on a broomstick, was considered to be a symbol of fertility. It was believed that the crop would grow as high as the witch could jump!
