Court reprieve for student
The high court on Monday directed Calcutta University to promote Adrija Bhattacharya, who had failed in the BA (Hons) Part I exams in 2005, to Part II. Justice Soumitra Pal ordered the university to issue a fresh marksheet to Adrija and allow her to sit for the Part II exams in 2006. The court upheld Adrija?s allegations of irregularities against the university.
Civic body for Sector V
Salt Lake Sector V will come under a new municipal authority from February 1, urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya said on Monday. The authority, to be headed by special secretary in the chief minister?s secretariat S.A. Ahmed, will be known as Naba Diganta Industrial Township.
Police probe
Police have relaunched their probe into the cases against Pinaki Mitra, who was arrested on Thursday on several charges and has been remanded in police custody. Police said Pinaki was involved in at least seven murder cases.
Civic blockade
The civic body on Monday set up a blockade with a distraint warrant at 2B, Grant Lane to realise outstanding property tax of over Rs 70 lakh. The blockade was withdrawn after the owner of the house coughed up Rs 21 lakh and promised to pay the rest in instalments.
Jute mill fire
A fire broke out at a jute mill in Shibpur around 4.40 am on Monday. Three tenders took two hours to control the blaze. The mill authorities said around 50 tonnes of jute, worth Rs 10 lakh, were gutted.
Suicide
Arun Kumar Saha, 83, committed suicide by jumping from the roof of his three-storeyed house on SN Banerjee Road on Monday. Police said he had been suffering from depression since the death of his only son in 1988.
Honour
Sri Sri Sitaramdas Omkarnath Samskrita Siksha Samsad has conferred Mahamahopadhyay (honoris causa) on Vedic scholar Swami Vidyadhishananda Giri for his contribution to Vedic heritage.
Actor dead
Theatre personality Satya Bandopadhyay died in his sleep on Sunday night. He was 74 and a bachelor.
