JIPMER traces its origin to 1823 when a medical school called Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry was established by the French government. It was taken over by the Indian government in 1956, and, in 1964, upgraded as a regional centre and named Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research. It is now under the administrative control of the directorate general of health services (DGHS), ministry of health and family welfare, Government of India.
Affiliated to Pondicherry University, JIPMER conducts a number of medical and paramedical courses. It is also involved in research in various fields of modern medicine and health and medical education. Spread over 195 acres of land, the campus houses its own post office, bank, shopping centre, hostels and residential complex.
The undergraduate courses at JIPMER include MBBS, BSc in medical laboratory technology, and bachelor of medical record science. The postgraduate courses offered are MD, and MS and MSc in medical biochemistry and PhD. There are also some super speciality courses.
The notification for the entrance examination is published in all leading newspapers and on the website: www.jipmer.edu around January or February. Requisition for the application forms and prospectus by post should reach the Registrar (Academic), JIPMER, Dhanvantrinagar, Pondicherry-605006, on or before February 28, along with a demand draft for Rs 350, drawn in favour of the ?Accounts Officer, JIPMER?, payable at Pondicherry. Candidates can also download the application form from the website and submit it online. The last date for receipt of completed applications is in the third week of March.
Eligibility
You should be an Indian national of at least 17 years of age on or before December 31, 2006. You should have passed or should be currently appearing for the Plus-Two exam from a recognised board, with physics, chemistry, biology or botany and zoology and English as subjects of study. You must have passed these subjects individually, with not less than 50 per cent marks in all these subjects taken together if you are a general candidate, and not less than 40 per cent marks if you are from the scheduled caste (SC) or scheduled tribe (ST) category.
Entrance Exam
JIPMER conducts an entrance exam on an all-India basis at Pondicherry, Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Calcutta and Thiruvanthapuram on the last Sunday of May. Some seats are also filled on the basis of an all-India exam conducted by CBSE.
Pattern of Exam
The entrance exam is based on the CBSE syllabus for classes XI and XII. It consists of 200 multiple choice questions in English, botany, zoology, physics and chemistry.
How to prepare
There are various guides for the medical entrance exam, such as Parihar, Bhatia, Shivam and Vishal. Practise answering questions on the various physics, chemistry and biology topics while they are being taught in class.You can practise biology from M.P. Kaushik and Ramesh Gupta. You can also refer to Physics 10+2 by H.C. Verma and Chemistry by O.P. Agarwal and Tata McGraw Hill publishers. You could do exercises of English comprehension and usage from Norman Lewis. Also practise writing the answers within the given time as most students find it difficult to complete the paper.
