A dream with a glass dome
Pandit Santanu Bandyopadhyay
Classical singer

Strange as it may sound, my first home is one that has not been built yet. Rather than calling it my first home, I would like to describe it as my “dream home”, especially as I have been dreaming about it from my college days!

I have always had a tremendous liking for the bungalows in American suburbia. A two-storeyed red-tiled bungalow with a small lawn in front and picket fences have always taken my fancy. Perhaps, with God’s grace, it will soon become a reality.

Because I have dreamt of it for a long time, I can easily state that in my mind, I have had plenty of time to plan it to perfection.

The ground floor will consist of a drawing-cum-dining room, kitchen and a guest bedroom. A room for my music is also an absolute must. The ground floor should be considerably more spacious than the upper floor and the flooring should be entirely wooden.

The ceiling of the dining room should be a dome made of transparent glass to let in light. It should have an eight-seater rectangular dining table and the kitchen should be open and easily accessible from the dining room.

The drawing room should have a wood-cum-mirror panelling all around. Leather sofas that are comfortable enough to fall asleep on are what I am partial towards. A large LCD TV and an easy chair should complete the decor.

On the second floor, I plan to have a small lounge-cum-sitting area for my close friends and relatives as we Bengalis simply cannot do without our adda. I would like to have three bedrooms.

The bedrooms should not be too large. Wall-to-wall cabinets, a television, a computer and attached verandahs with every bedroom should complete the look.

I prefer the minimalist decor. But I must make an exception for the master bathroom, for I feel it is the best place for a man to sit and think!

Being extremely particular about my bathroom, I have exact specifications for it. It should be at least 10 ft by 15 ft. A jacuzzi and a separate shower panel, his and her basins, wall-to-wall mirrors and an attached dressing area should satisfy my desires.

Being a classical singer, music should be omnipresent in my house and what better way to do that than by having a sound system connecting every room.
