With winter round the corner, many birds take off in tens and hundreds to move away to warmer grounds. Pintails fly away to Baluchishtan, Afghanistan, the Indus Valley, the sub-Himalayan region and occasionally to Maldives, where they spend the rest of the year before moving towards Southeast Asia, Central Africa and parts of America, during the cold winters. Pintails, anas acuta are large birds ? 56-74 cm, with a slim body that ends in a pointy tail. They have long necks, especially prominent when the birds are in flight. Pintails are sociable and seen in larger numbers. They are commonly found near reedy jheels, brackish lagoons and estuaries. During winter, dark marks can be seen on the flanks. Body marks are different for both males and females during the breeding season.
