Q & A

I am based in the US and planning to buy a flat in Calcutta with the sole intention of investment. I have seen a few projects in Joka and EM Bypass. Which areas of the city would be the most profitable if one is looking at a five-year investment?

Rahul Priyadarshi, USA

Besides Eastern Bypass, you can explore the West Howrah Township and, within Calcutta, the central and south-central part of the city. This stretch between Park Street and Ballygunge Circular Road is likely to appreciate the most. However, all the complexes being developed in this stretch are high-value projects. If you have a tight purse, you can look at Narendrapur on the southern fringes and Jessore Road in the north.

My daughter was born in India and lived here till her marriage in 1990 to a Nepalese citizen of Indian origin. After her marriage, she became a Nepalese citizen and passport holder. Now, because of the long-drawn Maoist disturbance and anti-India sentiments there, my son-in-law wishes to relocate to India, where they plan to buy residential and commercial properties. Can he do so? Does he need any permission?

Vishwanath Poddar, Calcutta

A foreign national can buy both residential and commercial property in India. However, persons of Indian origin who are citizens of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, China, Iran, Nepal and Bhutan need the RBI’s permission to buy property in India.

I have bought a government flat and formed a housing cooperative society. Should I register the flat through the society?

Manish Ghosh, Calcutta

Yes. The registration process should involve the housing cooperative society.
