Orang literally means a person in Malay while utan, derived from hutan, means forest, or a person living in the forest. Like all members of the primate order, orangutans are closely related to humans and they exhibit similar traits. You must have noticed their long arms, which they keep swinging by their sides. It is with these that they swing from tree to tree, all the while plucking and feeding on fruits and leaves. They use their long, flexible fingers to grip things and like human beings, have opposable thumbs and toes. These, along with their large teeth, come handy when they need to fight other males during the mating period. They live for about 60 years in the wild. Although they were found in large numbers in parts of Asia and China, today only 7,500 remain in northern Sumatra.
