In the bard?s footsteps
The 145th birth anniversary of visionary poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore is being observed today with traditional solemnity in different parts of the city. Day-long celebrations will take place at Tagore?s birthplace, Jorasanko, and at Rabindra Sadan (6 am onwards), comprising renditions of Tagore songs and poems by eminent artistes. Students and teachers of Naba Nalanda will present Rabindra Smaran (boulevard on Southern Avenue; 6.30 am), featuring a compilation of selected parts of Tagore?s dance-dramas. Also, solo Rabindrasangeet recitals by well-known artistes. Forty-seven talented child-artistes will pay homage to Tagore?s memory with a presentation of his songs and poems (Nehru Children?s Museum; 7 am). Charukantha will commemorate the day with songs, readings and recitations from Tagore (Sisir Mancha; 8.30 am). Calcutta Museum Society celebrates Tagore?s birthday with Chiro Nutaner Daak, a programme of his songs, poems and readings (Town Hall; 4 pm). Rabindra Jayanti will also be celebrated by Samaroh (Sisir Mancha; 5 pm), Surangama (Gyan Manch; 6.30 pm) and Bidhannagar Sanskriti Angan (Central Park; 6 am & Purbashree; 5 pm)

May 9 at HA Block Community Centre, Salt Lake; 6.30 am: Srinandana and Shruti Parishad present Ananda Gaan Uthuk Tabe Baji, featuring songs, readings and recitations from Tagore. May 9 at Maharshi Bhavan, Jorasanko; 6.30 pm: Kanthey Nilem Gaan, Tagore songs by artistes of Baitanik, along with discussions by Pranati Mukhopadhyay. May 10 at Sisir Mancha; 5.30 pm: Nana Range Rabindranath, a programme of Tagore songs, readings and recitations (accompanied by dance). May 12 at Tollygunge Club; 7.30 pm: The Four Rs ? Raga, Rhyme, Rhapsody and Rabindranath, exploring the commonality between raga sangeet, Western music and songs of Tagore.
