While being cross-examined for a title suit for eviction, I was told by the defendants lawyer that it was mandatory for non-resident Indians to inform the RBI if they own property in Calcutta.
I want to know whether it holds true if an NRI has inherited property in 1989 after the death of his father and done the mutation in the Calcutta Municipal Corporation in 1999. The NRI has also been paying municipal tax every year since then.
Asok Basu, Jodhpur Park
It is not mandatory for an NRI to inform the RBI after inheriting property in India.
I want details of the upcoming township project in west Howrah. The type of the project (plots/ flats), approximate cost, time of advertisement in newspapers, email and phone number.
P.K. Mondal
The project will be fully launched this month.
Several plots are available at various price points. A row house on 1.1 cottahs with a built-up area of 1,100 sq ft will cost Rs 18 lakh. A plot of 1.4 cottahs and 1,300 sq ft built-up area will come at Rs 22.5 lakh.
A 1.7-cottah plot with a built-up area of 1,850 sq ft will be Rs 33 lakh. A 2-2.5-cottah, 3,000-sq ft built-up area will be Rs 49 lakh. A 3-cottah, 3,300-sq ft built-up area will cost Rs 58-64 lakh while the biggest one (4.5-5 cottahs, 4,500 sq ft built-up area) is priced at Rs 76 lakh.

I bought a flat at Rahara (North 24-Parganas) and will register it this month. The promoter says I have to pay Rs 50 as stamp duty per square foot in addition to the normal rate for a marble floor as the flat will be put in the luxury bracket. Is it correct?
Subrata Mazumder
It is true that sub-registrars tend to value a flat higher if there is marble flooring. However, the Rs 50 figure seems arbitrary. It will depend on the valuation done by the sub-registrar and the stamp duty would have to be paid accordingly.
