Ungulates are hooved mammals. In fact, the word ungulate comes from unguis, the Latin word for nail, claw or hoof. Ungulates are ?digitigrade?, which means that they walk on their toes like ballerinas! There are two kinds of ungulates ? those with an even number of toes like deer, antelope, pigs and sheep and those with two toes on each foot. While the two-toed variety are known as artiodactyls, the odd-toed ungulates are known as perissodactyls and include horses, zebras, rhinos and tapirs. Rhinos and tapirs have three enlarged toes while horses and zebras have just one.
The hangul or Kashmir red deer, found only in the forested areas of the northwest Himalayas, in the Valley of Kashmir, has distinct white lips and chin. Its coat ranges from light to dark brown.
