troupe perform the Raas Leela |
The performances of renowned Manipuri dancer Priti Patel and her troupe at the SPICMACAY (Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) State Convention held at Lakshmipat Singhania Academy (LSA), Calcutta, on July 13, 2006, were a treat to watch.
The event started with the inauguration lamp being lit and speeches being given by Anjali Razdan, the principal of LSA, chief guest Anuja Chakraborty, regional director of Indian Council for Cultural Relations, and members of SPICMACAY.
Patel and her troupe performed mainly three forms of Manipuri dance, viz. Raas Leela, Samkirtana and the warrior dance, out of which the last two forms were especially appreciated by the lively audience consisting chiefly of students from 22 schools of Calcutta. Moreover, two members of the troupe gave a display of Manipuri martial arts. Patel also presented a slide show on Manipuri culture.
