Melbourne: A fine unbeaten knock of 199 by opener Phil Jaques propelled hosts Australia A to a strong position on the opening day of the four-day Top End Series against India A in Cairns on Tuesday.

At stumps, the hosts were 361 for 2, with Jaques and Travis Brit (82 off 142 balls) at the crease.
