Any Questions
Devi Kar
Principal, Modern High School for Girls, Calcutta

Q: I am in Plus Two and my Class X results were not so good. I would, however, like to go on to study medicine. But my parents don’t want to send me to a co-ed medical college. Can I get admission to any girls’ medical college?

Deivki

A: If I were you, I would concentrate on my Plus Two studies. Since you did not do too well in the Class X examinations, it is unlikely that you will be able to cope with your school studies and prepare for entrance tests to medical colleges as well. You can consider taking an extra year for that. There is no need to give up your dream but it does make sense to set yourself realistic goals and work hard to reach them.

Q: I am studying in Class VIII. I am academically bright but low in confidence. I also stammer when I try to talk. This has stopped me from making friends in school. I feel that since I can’t market myself well, my career prospects in the future are likely to get affected. How do I get over this handicap? Please help.

Name withheld

A: It is surprising that your parents have not sought professional help so far. An expert will identify the root cause of your problem and prescribe a therapy that is likely to include confidence building. There are several specialists, speech therapists and stammering clinics to choose from. Many people with similar problems have been completely cured.

Q: I have recently cleared my Class X board exams. I am the eldest daughter of the family and my widowed mother expects me to support her financially as soon as possible. I’ve heard that animation and graphics is a promising line. Is that so? Please tell me what I should take up that would be the least expensive and help me get good jobs.

Name withheld

A: Learning animation and graphic design can offer you many job opportunities. You can work as a graphic designer, games developer, visual effect designer, film animator, 3D artist, etc. A number of institutes in Calcutta, like Arena Animation Academy, Webel-Toonz, Roopkala Kendra, etc, offer a range of courses. If you seriously want to be an animator, you should also try for admission at the National Institute of Design at Ahmedabad, which is a premier institute. However, for getting good jobs you need to have experience. If getting an early job is your priority, you may consider careers in sales, physiotherapy, call centres, etc.

Q: I have passed Class X and XII from the West Bengal board and have secured 54 per cent and 57 per cent respectively. I have got a good rank in WBJEE. Of the various branches of engineering ? computer science, electrical, mechanical or civil ? which branch would provide me with the best job opportunities?

Akshat Verma

A: Job opportunities are plenty in each of the fields you have mentioned. So it is neither necessary, nor advisable to make your career choice on the basis of job availability alone. Instead, think about your aptitude and inclinations. Talk to teachers or senior students to get some idea about what each stream has to offer. Then think over the options, discuss with friends and family, and decide on what seems to be the most exciting option to you.
