Cops turn goons

Calcutta, July 28: A 19-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped by a police officer in March, came to Lalbazar today to tell his bosses that his colleagues were threatening her with death if she did not withdraw the complaint.

Joynagar police station sub-inspector Swar- oop Prakash Dhara was held in April. The teen’s husband was allegedly beaten up by policemen after their threats failed to scare the couple. CID deputy inspector-general D.P. Tarenia met them.

JU students

Purulia: Five pharmaceutical technology students of Jadavpur University who had gone on an expedition to Ayodhya hills in Purulia had to be rescued on Friday. They misread the depth and current of a swift, rain-fed river while crossing it near Ekra village, 320 km from Calcutta.

Tease arrest

Calcutta: Two cousins were arrested on the Alipore Judges Court premises on Friday af- ternoon for allegedly harassing a lawyer. Police said Amit Tarafdar, 28, and Ashok, 24, who live in Picnic Garden, had been making lewd passes at the 27-year-old woman for the past two months.

School shut

Krishnagar: A school in Nadia’s Bagula has been forced shut as a teacher beat up students for calling him names and refused to apologise.
