Guwahati, July 27: Five schoolchildren drowned while bathing in a pond in Bihoguri village under Dharamtul police station in Assam?s Morigaon district today.
Additional SP of Morigaon, A. Bhuyan told The Telegraph that all the victims were aged between nine and eleven years.
?A group of seven children had gone to bathe at a fishery owned by Arup Deori in Bihoguri village. While two of them were sitting on the bank, the remaining five got down to take a bath around 10.30 am when the incident took place,? he said.
Bhuyan suspected that the children may have wrongly anticipated the level of water in the pond when they took the plunge.
The victims were identified as Class II student Rupanjit Deori, Class III student Ankur Pator, Class IV students Rapu Bordoloi and Nayanjyoti Bordoloi and Class V student Rinku Singh Deori.
Villagers and police made an attempt to save the children, but their efforts proved futile.
A pall of gloom descended over the village when news of the tragedy spread.
