Manipur bandh over dam total

Imphal, July 28: Normal life in many parts of Manipur was crippled today following a 24-hour general strike called by the Action Committee Against Tipaimukh Project demanding scrapping of the Rs 600-crore scheme to be taken up in the state.

The strike, which ended at 6 pm today, was by and large peaceful. However, bandh supporters burnt effigies of chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh at a few places. Police had to fire in the air to disperse a group of bandh supporters at Singjamei of Imphal East last night. No one was injured in the incident.

The police reportedly picked up four bandh supporters at Nambol while a group of supporters was enforcing the strike in Bishenpur district. A spokesman for the committee said the strike evoked a total response.

Under pressure, Ibobi Singh has convened an interaction programme of experts and leaders of the committee on August 21 in Imphal to discuss the project.
