Royal open with a bang

Guwahati, July 28: Strong contenders Royal Sports Club trounced Nabajyoti Club 5-0 in the inaugural match of the Guwahati Sports Association?s Sekhar Goswami first division football league here today. The match was played at Nehru Stadium.

The Royal Sports side dominated the proceedings right from the word go. Striker Amit Dey fashioned the lead for the winners as early as in the 11th minute.

Conceding the goal, the Nabajyoti men stepped up their campaign for a moment but found themselves pushed to the backfoot once again. Their opponents launched a counter-offensive at regular intervals but were mostly unsuccessful.

The Nabajyoti side conceded three of the goals due to Mushahary?s poor goalkeeping while two other goals were scored by Royal Sports capitalising on defence lapses.

Rajeswar Das cashed in on a defence lapse to pump in the second goal for Royal in the 45th minute. They led 2-0 at the breather.

Into the second session, Dhananjay Brahma deflected home a fourth minute free kick from Rahul Baruah, catching the defenders and custodian Mushahary completely off-guard.

Substitute Kh. Prasanta Singh then scored a brace in quick succession, boosting the scoreline again. He netted his first with a long ranger in the 19th minute. Another came off a cross from Ronel Singh in the 23rd minute.
