Hailakandi, July 28: Balai Suklavaidya, the driver of Katlicherra primary health centre in-charge and prime suspect in the July 11 attack on a nurse posted there, surrendered to the district police last night.
The circle inspector of Hailakandi, Faizur Rahman, said Suklavaidya was upset and had ?revealed many things? during interrogation. Among others, he alleged the involvement of his employer, Dr Jayanta Das, and his son, Raju Das, in the attack on nurse Dipali Das.
Suklavaidya had allegedly attacked Dipali five times with a sharp weapon and gone into hiding before surrendering at Lala police station, 17 km from this town.
Police sources said Suklavaidya told the police that Das, Raju and he had chalked out a plan on July 10 to evict Dipali from the doctor?s official quarters ?after teaching her a lesson?. Dipali was living in the quarters for the past few years.
The next morning, Suklavaidya and Raju went to Katlicherra in the doctor?s car. Suklavaidya left the car to seek out Dipali while Raju stayed in the vehicle.
After stabbing Dipali several times, Suklavaidya returned to the car and fled with Raju. They went to the doctor?s residence at Lala where he handed over the car keys to Das. He alleged that Das advised him to flee the district to avoid the police.
Police tried to trace Suklavaidya after Dipali?s uncle filed an FIR, but failed.
The driver said he spent several days in Silchar and Karimganj, but decided to surrender last night as he was running out of money and Das was not ready to pay him. He said he had made several phone calls to the doctor from his hideout for help.
He alleged that the doctor had an illicit relationship with Dipali who was mounting pressure on him to marry her. However, vehement protests from his son and daughter prompted him to give up on her. Finding no alternative, Das allegedly deputed his driver to evict her from his quarters. He even assured Suklavaidya of a job at the Katlicherra health centre afterwards.
Lala police have handed over Suklavaidya to Katlicherra police station. Rabindra Sinha, officer-in-charge of Katlicherra police station, said interrogations were on.
Doctors at the Silchar Medical College Hospital, where Dipali is undergoing treatment, said her condition was critical.
Das could not be contacted since his driver?s surrender.
