Sonia stands by Rymbai

Shillong, July 28: Former Meghalaya chief minister D.D. Lapang and his supporters made a last-ditch attempt today to convince Congress president Sonia Gandhi to dislodge J.D. Rymbai from the hot seat.

However, AICC sources said the present configuration of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) is unlikely to be disturbed.

AICC sources are of the view that the high command is not interested in dislodging the Rymbai-led dispensation in Meghalaya. One of them said Sonia Gandhi has iterated her decision to ?address the problem? without disturbing the present combination under Rymbai during her meeting with Lapang and his supporters.

Lapang is currently camping in New Delhi, along with a group of around 14 MLAs. A number of legislators, who are supporting the dissidence, has come out openly in favour of bringing back Lapang as chief minister.

A handout faxed from New Delhi today claimed that Congress president Sonia Gandhi separately met Lapang and all those supporting him.

She reportedly promised them that she would look into the matter.

The fax was signed by Tonsing Marak, one of the dissident Congress MLAs and a vice-president of the Meghalaya PCC. It said Lapang had apprised the AICC president about the political situation in the state.

Marak also said senior AICC member Oscar Fernandez was directed to cancel his Bangkok trip so that he could address the problem. Interestingly, the note was silent on the actual discussions that were held between Sonia Gandhi and the group led by Lapang.

Some of the MLAs, who were only recently speaking out openly about ?an inevitable change in governance?, refused to comment, claiming ?it was an internal matter of the party?.
