Sania-Mattek downs Shikha-Jelena

Stanford: Sania Mirza moved into the doubles semi-finals of the $600,000 Bank of West Classic.

In the second round, Sania and partner Bethanie Mattek of the US, got the better of compatriot Shikha Uberoi and Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Montenegro 6-2, 6-2.

In the semi-final, the Indo-US duo will meet the winner of the match between Ukrainian pair of Alona Bondarenko and Kateryna Bondarenko and Marta Camerin of Italy and Gisela Dulko of Argentina.

Meanwhile, the biggest names in a largely anonymous field are still alive in the singles.Patty Schnyder, Nicole Vaidisova and Anna-Lena Groenefeld scored straight-set victories on Thursday to reach the quarter finals of the WTA event.

Unseeded Vera Zvonareva, last week’s surprise winner in Cincinnati, also advanced with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 victory over Nathalie Dechy.

After No. 1 seed Kim Clijsters’ victory on Wednesday, the meet’s top four seeds are all in the quarter finals.

Schnyder, the second seed, beat qualifier Akiko Morigami 6-1, 6-4. The Swiss is the WTA’s eighth-ranked player, but still hasn’t won a tournament this season, reaching just one final.

Groenefeld, the No. 4 seed, beat Vasilisa Bardina 6-3, 7-5.

Third-seeded Vaidisova, the 17-year-old French Open semi-finalist, completed the last-eight field with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sybille Bammer. Though Vaidisova’s focus wandered in the second set, the Czech’s smooth groundstrokes were too much for her Austrian opponent.

Schnyder will face Jill Craybas, while Groenefeld will meet France’s Tatiana Golovin. Vaidisova will face Samantha Stosur in a rematch of Vaidisova’s entertaining three-set victory in Sydney before the Australian Open.

Zvonareva rallied from a 1-3 deficit in the first-set tie-breaker to beat Dechy. The Russian faces Clijsters in the quarter finals. (Agencies)
