Couple found dead
Calcutta, Aug. 28: A couple was found dead in an apartment at Kalindi tonight.
Their next-door neighbour, Moloy Saha, went to the Lake Town police station around 10.30 pm to say that Sarit and Munmun Ghosh, both in their early 30s, were not responding to calls, police said. Officers from the police station broke open the flats entrance door and found the couple lying dead. The two had apparently committed suicide by slashing their veins.
Quota protest
Calcutta: Around 20 medical and engineering students began a hunger strike at the Medical College and Hospital here on Monday evening, protesting against reservation in higher education for other backward classes. The students are demanding an apolitical committee to review the proposed 27 per cent quota for OBCs and the chief ministers apology for the police lathicharge on their rally last week.
DM shuffle
Calcutta: Bankura district magistrate Prabhat Mishra has been transferred to North 24-Parganas. Haldia Development Authority CEO Surendra Gupta will replace Mishra.
China plan
Calcutta: Chinese company JOC has sought land for a special economic zone near the city. It wants to make electronic devices. A company delegation will be here on September 1.

Innocent MP
Calcutta: Former Purulia MP Bir Singh Mahato, who was convicted of a gangrape by a trial court but released on bail by the high court, accused police of fra-ming him on Monday. Perhaps Im the first MP to be jailed after being framed in a false case, said the Forward Bloc leader who resigned from his Lok Sabha membership after the conviction in the 1982 case three months ago.
