Presentation on city makeover

Eleven trade bodies on Monday made a presentation before chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at Writers’ Buildings on a master plan for Calcutta’s beautification. The Indian Chamber of Commerce was acting as the coordinating agency of the trade bodies.

The plan highlights include greening of the city, preservation of heritage structures, makeover of public transport, street lights, development of riverfront, and improvement of hygiene, sanitation and slums. The objective behind the plan is to bring together all groups working for the beautification of the city,” said S.K. Bangur, president of the Indian Chamber of Commerce. The plan also includes beautification of parks, and the prime flyovers and roads leading to the airport and railway stations.

Auto driver shot at

Afsar Seikh, 19, was shot in the stomach by a teen gang in Bally, Howrah, on Sunday night. Police said the gang was gossiping in Afsar’s autorickshaw. As Afsar protested, the gang attacked him and one member shot at him from a pipegun. He was taken to Howrah State General Hospital, where his condition was stated to be critical. The attackers fled. An investigation has been launched.

Found dead

A man, in his mid 50s, was found dead near the crossing of Sarat Bose Road and Elgin Road on Sunday evening. Police said pedestrians saw the man lying on the road. They rushed him to SSKM Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The body did not bear any injury mark.

Fall off bus

Nibedita Sur, in her 50s, was critically injured after falling off a private bus on route 3B/3D-1, near APC Road-Sahitya Parishat Street crossing, in north Calcutta, on Monday afternoon. Local residents took her to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where her condition was stated to be critical. The bus has been impounded and the driver arrested.

Road fatality

Sahajan Mollah, 25, died after a trailer hit the scooter he was riding on Central Garden Reach Road, near Dock Gate 8, on Monday afternoon. He was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he died. Sahajan’s brother Ali Mollah, who was driving the scooter, was injured. The driver of the trailer managed to flee leaving behind his vehicle.

Heart attack

A Life Insurance Corporation agent died of a heart attack on CR Avenue, near Chandni Chowk Metro station, on Monday afternoon. Traffic constable Makar Murmu, who saw Kirit Rawal, 52, slump to the road, hailed a taxi and took Rawal to Medical College and Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Power theft

Sukur Ali, a resident of Metiabruz, was arrested on Monday morning for pilfering power. Police said the raid on Ali’s house followed a complaint from the local CESC office. A CESC official said Ali had been involved in the crime for the past couple of months.
