Naseeruddin Shahs directorial debut, Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota (Shemaroo; DVD Rs 399) is a film worth a watch. Done in an episodic manner the film focuses on several people with a singular motive — thats reaching America. You have some simple stories woven around each of these characters, all desperate to leave this country and step on the American soil. You have Paresh Rawal whos taking his troupe and his just-found daughter there, you have Ankur Khanna whos got admission for higher studies in an American university but is in two minds due to his ailing father. Then there is Konkona Sensharma whos desperate to unite with her husband Jimmy Shergill whos in the US but has not been granted the visa. And there is this estranged couple Irrfan-Suhasini Mulay. Naseer leaves all these characters absolutely unconnected till the end of the film but they still connect through one devastating event, the 9/11 blast that shook the world. All these four separate characters apparently were at the epicentre of this devastating event. How? Well, you got to find out. The film also has Ratna Pathak, Ayesha Takia and Saroj Khan among others. The DVD here provides some extra features as well, right from the making of the film to what Naseeruddin has to say about his debut film, its concept, location, cast, et al. The benefit of watching it on the DVD is its subtitles available in eight different languages.
