Hot hangout with happening brew
- After success of Cafe Coffee Day in Capitol Hill, chain decides to open two more outlets

Ranchi, Nov. 5: Attitude, style and caffeine make for a heady mix and the city is craving for more.

Buoyed by the success of its 250 sq. ft outlet in the Capitol Hill complex, Café Coffee Day is looking to expand with Ranchi’s residents sipping like never before.

The chain, which started operations in Ranchi in February 2005, is keen to open two more outlets in the city to cater to its booming clientele. “We are looking for space. Locations near Hariom Towers, Circular Road and the airport are a few options,” said Rohit Anand, assistant manager and in-charge of the Capitol Hill outlet.

The success has been spectacular. Anand says the Ranchi outlet has become the most successful of all the 33 CCDs in eastern India and ranks 7th among the 350 the chain has across 66 cities of India.

With the six-table joint recording an average daily footfall of 500-750, the management surely has its hands — and cups — full. “In a city devoid of places for youngsters to chill, the coffee shop has become the latest meeting point. This is the latest craze among youngsters,” says Abhishek Singh, a student.

The cappuccino starts brewing from 9 in the morning and the cups are on the tables till 11.30 in the night. The national coffee chain is known for its reasonable rates that are a big hit with young (and broke) students. It comes as no surprise that its biggest patrons are youths in the age bracket of 18 to 28.

“But this does not mean that families don’t patronise us. Late evening hours are usually for them,” says Anand.

The objective of a shop is not only to serve good coffee but also create an environment for people to socialise. With comfy sofas, couches and modular chairs, the café chain has been creating amenities for their patrons, in the hope that they linger, chat and get thirsty again. “It will be great if we have more coffee shops. They are really cool,” says Preeti, a second-year student.

What hooks the youths to the hotspots are the frappes and cappuccino. Says Anand: “On an average we sell 200 to 250 cups each of Café Frappe and Cappuccino everyday.” Other popular drinks are Americano, Café Latte, Café Mocha and Irish Coffee. And if you have a sweet tooth, you can savour delicious brownies and Choco walnuts — a hit with youngsters.

But if you’re not a coffee-person, you won’t go without a sip. Various flavours of tea are also served, the popular being Assam tea, Masala tea and Lemon ice tea. And if you go hungry you can dig in to chicken garlic, chicken tikka and chicken clantro sandwiches. The quick eats come for around Rs 45.

Apart from being a “hangout” zone, college students also find employment opportunities at the café. Two college students work as part-timers and four hotel management graduates constitute the sales team of the outlet.
