La Spectacle, the science exhibition held at National English School in Baguiati, had the whole school brimming with activity for three consecutive days from September 26. Inaugurated by renowned cardiologist Dr R.S. Majumdar and Tapas Chatterjee, the chairman of Rajarhat Gopalpur Municipality, the theme of the exhibition was ‘Water’.
Separate sections were set up for physics, chemistry, biology, computer science and geography. Various interesting experiments on water conducted in the physics and chemistry sections caught the attention of the visitors. The biology section had charts and models on water pollution, germination, function of the skin and kidneys, etc.
The geography section was particularly impressive. The perfection with which the students had prepared the charts and models bore proof of their hard work. Beautifully-done models on how rivers, seas and oceans work were treats to watch. The students smartly answered the queries of the guests.

CALCUTTA
Freshers’ welcome
Bethune College, Calcutta, celebrated its freshers’ welcome meet on September 22, 2006. It was organised by the college union in the Centenary Hall of the college. Ignoring the rain, everybody made it a point to attend the function. Hats off to the first year students who, braving the rain and the waterlogged streets, made it to the college in saris.
The show started with a welcome speech by the general secretary. The seniors staged dance performances based on the music of Bollywood chartbusters and Punjabi folk songs. There was a spoof on the Durga Puja celebrations. The first year students joined in dancing to popular songs like Beedi jalaile and Main hoon naa. One of them was crowned Ms Bethune.
