Last Mughal: The Fall of a Dynasty, Delhi, 1857, by
William Dalrymple will be launched. It is a Penguin publication.

12th Calcutta Film Festival
(Rabindra Sadan, till November 17) Roberto Rossellini’s
Stromboli will be screened at 9.15 am on November
15. Also in line are Ingmar Bergman’s Through
a Glass Darkly (Nov 13, 11.15), Winter Light (Nov
14, 9.15 am) and The Silence (Nov 17, 11.15 am).
Robert Wise’s West Side Story is slated for Nov 16
at 11.15 am.
THE TV SHOW
When The Bamboo Flowers
(Animal
Planet, 9 pm, November 12) “When bamboo flowers, famine death
and destruction will soon follow,” or so goes the tribal saying
in the Northeast. The one-hour special looks at this cycle
of famine and plague that recurs every 48 years. Animal Planet
visits the villagers preparing for a catastrophe as the bamboo
starts flowering again in 2006. They hope the jinx will be
broken this time.
