Amongst the largest beetles, the unicorns or rhinoceros beetles are considered to be the world’s strongest animals. They can lift weights up to 850 times their own size — for a human, that would mean lifting about 65 tons!
The unicorn beetle gets its unique name from the huge horn that is found on the males of this species. They use the horn in territorial fights with rival males.
They belong to the same family as the famous dung beetles. But, unlike their cousins who lay eggs in the dung, the unicorn beetles’ eggs are laid in rotting logs.
These logs also serve as baby food for the new born unicorn beetles when the eggs hatch!
Adult unicorns mostly feed on nectar and plant matter.
