Any Questions

Father Mathew
Principal, St Xavier’s College, Calcutta

Q: I am a student of Class X. I am quite good in mathematics and physics but I’m very weak in chemistry. Would it be better for me to take up science or commerce in Plus Two? I am studying under the ICSE Board. What are the prospects if I take up commerce?

Ahamjit Das Mahapatra

A: There are many like you who are really victims of poor teaching. Some teachers, because of their inability to communicate or through the use of poor methodology, create in the students not just an aversion but a real phobia for a subject! Take tuition and guidance from a teacher who will inspire you to study and master chemistry. This should be your immediate priority. It will be foolish on anyone’s part to counsel you for your future course of studies based on what you have written. If you have the confidence, take up science and maths in Plus Two and pass with flying colours. However, I would advise you to wait for your Class X results before you decide whether to take up science, arts or commerce. I would also advise you to take steps to understand yourself in terms of your talent and aptitude through personal or professional guidance. Finally, what is needed to climb the professional ladder today is at least a good graduation certificate — whether that is in science, arts or commerce is immaterial. With a good result in graduation, your future will open up.

Biprodas Bhattacharya
Senior teacher, Rama Krishna Mission School Narendrapur

Q: I passed my board exams with 82.2 per cent marks and am studying commerce. Should I opt for a BCom or a BBA after Plus Two?

Neha

A: If you are undecided about studying management, I suggest you go for a BCom because then options like CA, company secretaryship and cost accountancy will also be open to you. Doing a BBA narrows down your choices.
