Kathak exponent Malabika Mitra gave a dance recital on November 7 at M.P. Birla School as part of Viraasat 2006 organised by the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture amongst Youth (Spicmacay). The aroma of incense and a beautiful rangoli created the perfect ambience for the performance. The proceedings began with the ceremonial lamp being lit by Mitra along with our principal.
Mitra started her performance with a bhajan dedicated to Lord Shiva. She also recounted the journey of Kathak and explained how it had evolved over the ages.
Mitra also performed the famous dance Bindiya ki Gat where she demonstrated the actions of a girl who is possessive about her bindiya. It was a great learning experience for all of us. At the end of the performance our principal gave the vote of thanks and the artistes were given a few tokens of appreciation. The students enjoyed the performance very much and Spicmacay was definitely successful in its mission of spreading awareness about Indias rich culture amongst its youth.

Trade talks
The economics department of Bethune College organised a seminar on international trade and growth at the college premises on November 15.
The guest lecturer for the event was Prof. Sugato Marjit of the Industrial Economics Culture for Studies in Social Services, Calcutta. Prof. Marjit began by speaking on the history of trade and how it grew under the colonial rule.
He also explained the role played by international trade in the development of a country. This was followed by an interactive session with Bethune students throwing up interesting questions for Prof. Marjit. All in all, it proved to be a very informative seminar.
