Justice Sirpurkar to join apex court

Chief justice of Calcutta High Court V.S. Sirpurkar will join the Supreme Court. He will be succeeded by Justice V.K. Gupta, chief justice of the high court in Uttaranchal. Justice Gupta was also chief justice of Ranchi High Court.

Buddha warning

Extremist and terrorist groups from outside are trying to set up base in the city, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said on Monday. Speaking at a Calcutta Police function, Bhattacharjee ruled out any negotiation with those who believe in terror. Police, he asserted, will have to keep a constant vigil on these elements. The chief minister, who also looks after the police department, asked cops to be people-friendly and lauded their efforts to curb crime in the city.

Land map

State finance minister Asim Dasgupta announced on Monday that a land map of North 24-Parganas has been prepared to facilitate use of land for industry. The map has been prepared based on Geographical Information System, said Dasgupta, who was speaking at Industrial Trade Fair in Sinthee.

Kalam visit

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will arrive in the city on Tuesday evening to attend a series of functions.

Child throttled

Aditya Shaw, 4, was throttled to death allegedly by his neighbours in Titagarh, on the northern fringes of the city, on Sunday night. Superintendent of police, North 24-Parganas, Praveen Kumar said the murder followed a quarrel between Aditya’s parents and their next-door neighbour, Jagadish Sau, over the demarcation of a wall. Aditya’s father had moved court last week to settle the dispute. Jagadish and three of his accomplices were allegedly responsible for the murder.

Body found

The body of an unidentified man was found near gate 1 of the old complex of Howrah station on Monday morning. An officer of the Government Railway Police said the body bore no injury. It has been sent for post-mortem.

Mishap injury

Rakesh Shaw, 50, was critically injured after being knocked down by a truck on Paharpur Road, in the city’s port area, early on Monday. Local residents took him to SSKM Hospital. The truck was impounded but the driver fled.

Seminar

The Indian chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, in collaboration with Institution of Civil Engineers (eastern region) and Indian Organisation of World Federalists, will hold a seminar on Infrastructural Development as Related to Poverty Alleviation on December 8 at RN Mukherjea Hall of Institution of Engineers. State transport minister Subhas Chakraborty will inaugurate the event.

Pension day

The All India State Government Employees Federation will observe Save Pension Day on Tuesday. Rallies will be organised across the city to protest the proposed pension bill of the Centre.
