I have passed my ISC exams this year with more than 75 per cent marks. I want to pursue higher studies in pure physics or engineering (computer science/nanotechnology) from a foreign university. Could you please suggest some good institutes? What tests shall I have to appear for? Will I be able to take the SAT exams now?

Tania

There are a number of universities across the globe which offer the courses of your choice and are considered good. Depending upon the country, university, and course you choose — and the test scores and the academic background you have — you may be considered suitable for some. Some of the best institutes are, of course, in the US and you can visit their websites for further guidance. If you want to study computer engineering, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, Carnegie Mellon University, and University of California-Berkeley are considered the best. If it is nanotechnology you want to opt for, head to the University of Virginia. Physics has many specialities and Harvard University, MIT and the University of Washington offer very good courses in some specialities. Remember, however, that getting admission into these institutes is very tough as they are the Mecca for all students.

Depending on the country and/or university you choose, you may have to clear one or more of the following tests — IELTS, TOEFL, SAT and GRE.

The SAT test scores are considered valid for five years. The SAT is held about six to seven times a year, and there is a corresponding registration deadline. Consult www.collegeboard.com for registration and deadlines.
