Freshers have a ball

On November 24, the Calcutta University students’ union arranged a programme to welcome the new batch of students. The programme started at 12 noon with introductory speeches by a few professors and the general secretary of the union. The first cultural item was a performance by the second year students that combined a modern dance with a classical dance form. This was followed by a mesmerising performance by a second-year student of Bengali honours, who sang some all-time hits of Asha Bhonsle, along with modern Hindi film songs. Especially good was her rendition of the title song of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. But the adrenaline really started pumping when Bangla band Shunyo took the stage. They gave a mind-blowing performance with songs like Shei Tumi and Bheegi-Bheegi.

CALCUTTA
High drama

The Dramatics Society of Loreto College organised an inter-batch one-act play on November 24, 2006. The first-year students presented Refund by Percival Wilde, a hilarious story about a man who comes back to his school after 18 years to ask for a refund of his tuition fees. The Birth of the Bloomer by C. Neil Gattey and Bramley Moore, a play that speaks of gender equality, was enacted by the second-year batch. But surely the best play of the day was the humourous Women in Waiting, put up by the third years, which was about what goes on in the minds of patients waiting outside a doctor’s chamber. The judges for the event were Rana Basu Thakur and Tathagata Chowdhury. The award for the best actress and best director went to third-year students Sana Imtiaz and Priyanka Roy, respectively.

Team spirit

November 22, 2006, will remain an unforgettable day for Satyamites (ELTP 593 - 595 and 582). The secret talents of all the wannabe software engineers came to the fore at the cultural evening titled Impulse, with dance performances, skits and other cultural programmes. Songs like Dola Re got the crowd dancing. It was a great show by Team ELTP and showcased the team spirit, dedication, hard work and perfect camaraderie among the different batches.

Unique experience

On November 16, Hariyana Vidya Mandir organised a geographical field survey on ‘Poverty’ for the students of Class XII (Arts). Twenty-three students, escorted by two teachers, visited the slums of Shyambazar and talked to the people living there. We came to know about their daily lifestyle, what kind of problems they face, their complaints and collected the required data. It was a unique experience for all of us.

Tabla beats

Bidya Sagar Bidyapith, Dhubulia, Nadia, arranged a solo tabla programme on November 14 to celebrate Shishu Divas or Children’s Day. The programme began with a recital by Subhrangshu Chakraborty on teen taal. He went on to entertain the teachers and the students by playing many interesting compositions like a train going over the tracks and the gallop of a horse. He also attempted a few traditional compositions, all of which were appreciated. The rhythm cast a magic spell on the audience and it was really an evening to remember.
